Mikan original bumbag, combining a vintage obi made of silk and 24K gold lamé, and new materials.
The motif represented is a rich mix of flowers and traditional elements. The wisterias and peonies evoke spring, the plum blossoms the end of Winter, and the chrysanthemums are a very auspicious symbol. In the background, you can see a lot of smaller motifs such as waves, geometrical flower shapes called hanabishi, and Cranes flying on the side of the bag.

The motif represents a garden with chrysanthemums, irises, long grass dancing in the wind, and water flowing (very thin white lines).
The original obi is visible below. You can see that I purposely selected the garden and not the famous Golden Pavilion. I wanted to bring attention to the surrounding motifs, rather than the main elements, and show how delicate and detailed these motifs are, even though they are not meant to be the centre of attention. But I thought, for once, they should! And they can be appreciated independently for their own beauty.

The motif represents Plum branches in full bloom.
The original obi is visible below. You can see that I selected only the flowers and left the swirls and pines for other creations. In fact, this very bag is made of patched-up pieces that were too small to make a bag out of, but I really wanted to see what they’d look like if they could be turned into a bumbag!
I’m very happy with the result despite the discreet extra seams*, and I’m glad I went through with this idea! Of course, extra seams are not invisible, you can see one on the top part and one horizontal below the zip. And even if they result from more work (especially to get the motif matching precisely!), I am gifting her new owner a little discount for the trouble.
