Vintage Kimono Handbag - Shibori & Chrysanthemums in Water

US$28.00

Vintage item

Details & Origin

This clutch is made with the silk of a vintage kimono.

Recycling kimono textiles into bags is very popular nowadays, but artisans like me didn’t invent it! It has been done for decades. Reusing the remnant of a fabric when it is tailor-made ( and a little bit is left) or transforming a used kimono into something new is a way to cherish and respect precious materials.

The motif represents Chrysanthemums and curled waves, hand-painted on the silk with tiny dots. It also features yellow shibori (tie-dye) motifs on one side of the bag, giving it true Sunny Autumn in Japan vibes

Opens and closes with a clasp button.

A silk handle can be pulled out or hidden inside, so you can wear it either as a small handbag or as a carry clutch.

Condition

Used, in good condition, with a noticeable stain on the left side (see the last photo). No damage or tears, and the stain is quite discreet; it doesn’t spoil this vintage piece, in my opinion. Dimension

  • 21 cm long ~ 8 3/8 in

  • 11 cm high ~ 4 1/4 in

  • 3,8 cm depth ~ 1 1/2 in

  • Inner pocket 12 x 6 cm ~ 4 3/4 × 2 1/4 in

Sourced in Kyoto, Japan.
