Bamboo plate - Flying Crane
Vintage item (new)
Origin & details
This plate was crafted by the renowned Kyoto-based lacquerware house Zohiko. The history of the house dates back to 1661, and the current master is the 9th generation of the family, Nishimura Hikobei. You can read more about the history of the house on their English website.
Imagine shaving a slim sheet of bamboo and holding this extremely light and soft object in your hands. That’s exactly how holing this late feels. To create this piece, a thin piece of bamboo skin was covered by lacquer and gold leaves to create the crane motif. The texture of the bamboo is visible on the plate and is what M. Nishimura calls “a pattern created by nature”.
