Isesaki kimono fabric - wool roll

US$65.00

Vintage item

This roll of Isesaki kasuri is made up of 13 m of wool, or the amount needed for a tailor-made winter kimono.

Details & origin

Kasuri is the Japanese term for ikat, designating a specific type of fabric made with tie-dyed threads (you can read more about it at the bottom of this page). The origin of Isesaki kasuri dates back over 170 years ago, with the first record of the weaving technique being used in 1847, in Isezaki city, in Gunma prefecture. The fabric had a big revival after the war and has been registered as a traditional Japanese craft since 1976.

The fabric is appreciated for its quality and durability. It is said to become even more beautiful over time. With use and wear, the fabric gains better shine and deepens in colour, improving the appearance of the pattern

The labels on the end of the roll tell us that the fabric is certified Isesaki wool (certified by the Industrial Union of Isesaki Textiles). There is no information regarding the pattern, but it seems to me that it could be kaki fruits since they grow in the winter and this is a winter fabric.

Condition

Old but new: the product has never been used before but be aware that it is a vintage item.

Good overall condition. The colours remain unchanged and the fabric has no holes or wear. But although it is new, this fabric presents small stains in 3 locations, due to humidity and years of storage.

Made in Isezaki, Gunma, Japan.
