Feathery Grass and Mountain Mist
This obi depicts a quiet Japanese landscape with Mountains rising above a field of susuki, or Japanese pampas grass.
The susuki immediately places the scene in autumn. It is one of the traditional Seven Grasses of Autumn, and its silvery plumes are particularly associated with autumn moon-viewing in Japan.
The colours stay within a palette of smoky greys, blue-greens and warm beige, while the snow-capped mountains stand pround in the centre of this misty landscape. As the fabric moves in the light, subtle iridescent hues appear in the background.
There is something very peaceful about the way the mountains, the forest and susuki are reduced to layers of texture and colour.
A Personal Memory
To me, this obi instantly reminded me of my time living in the South of Kyushu and driving on the way to Kirishima in the autumn. The susuki grass framing the view on the beautiful lake Miike, with Takachiho in the background. If you ever lived or visited the countrysides of Japan at the right season, you might also have lovely memories coming up as you contemplate this obi. It might even make you think of another landscape closer to home wherever your are reading this from. Mountains and grass are present all around Earth after all!
Framing
When ordering a small, you can choose which element feature on the bag. For larger bags, especially Weekenders, all elements of the motif can appear.

In-person workshop in Kyoto
If you are visiting Kyoto and would like to spend some time discovering these fabrics in person, you are welcome to visit my studio.
Together, we will design your bag from A to Z. You will choose your favourite obi and even cut the fabric yourself, selecting the exact part of the motif you love most.
I will then carefully sew and finish your bag and ship it to you once it is complete.
