Hokusai’s four views of Mount Fuji woven in silk

This obi features four of Hokusai’s iconic woodblock prints in the celebrated Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series. The weaver has masterfully combined key elements from each scene, rearranging them into a single, harmonious design.

From Fine Wind, Clear Morning (also known as South Wind, Clear Sky or Red Fuji), come the rich, warm tones of the mountain, woven here in reds hues that echo the glow of dawn on Fuji’s slopes. From Thunderstorm Beneath the Summit, golden lightning bolts flash at the foot of the volcano as well as the curly clouds floating around it.

The rocky slope climbed by travelers and pack horses recalls Inume Pass in Kai Province, while the tranquil seascape, with its small village, shrine-topped island, and a lone sailboat gliding through the water, is inspired by Enoshima in Sagami Province. Together, these scenes form a panoramic vision that feels at once familiar and entirely new.

It is not unusual for obi weavers to reinterpret public domain artworks or long-standing traditional motifs. Many of these family-run workshops design their own patterns in-house, without commissioning outside designers, drawing on centuries of cultural imagery for inspiration. This obi is a testament to that tradition.

Framing

When ordering, make sure to indicate whether you prefer Autumn or Winter colours. When ordering a Phone bag or a Bumbag, you can choose the details and colours of the motif you would like to feature on your bag. A bigger design like the Computer bag or the Weekender will allow the entire motif to show.
