Motif

This obi is decorated with various flowers and traditional patterns, all arranged in an interesting juxtaposition of hexagons. As the golden outlines of these geometrical shapes overlay, the spaces in between is filled with vivid red flowers. We can recognize several autumn flowers such as chrysanthemums and small bellflowers. To me, they almost appear as if they were precious jewels set in a gold mount.

The paulownia flower is represented in a fully silver hexagon, and the hanabishi, literally “the rhombus flower”, is represented in a fully gold one.

On the edges of the obi, traditional patterns of waves (seigaiha) and overlaying circles (kago) appear in gold tones circled with a red line.
