Mapple leaves & Plum blossoms

Motif

This obi felt very special to me for two reasons. First, the scale of the momiji leaves is delightfully large. Second, the maple leaves are woven together with contrasting plum blossoms in cool tones. In reality, there is an entire winter between the season of red leaves and the moment plum flowers begin to bloom, so I found it amusing to see them combined on a single obi. They represent the two most exciting moments of the colder months, the milestones just before and just after the deep winter, when most trees are still asleep for a couple of months.

Motif detail: gold-leaf-like woven background

The background is woven with golden threads, creating a rough-edged square-scale pattern. This design symbolises the application of gold leaf, referencing traditional folding screen paintings where gold leaf is often applied to the background.

The golden parts of the motif, made of silk and lamé, have a highly shimmering effect. The black parts are matte and bring out the vibrant colours of the silk threads.

Framing

When ordering a Phone bag or a Bumbag, you can choose the details and colours of the motif you would like to feature on your bag. A larger design, such as the Computer Bag or the Weekender, will allow the entire motif to be visible. For example, you can choose to have mostly red leaves or more flowers, and select between the blue, green, or white ones.
