Folded Dancing Fans
Motif
Traditional Motifs with a Rhythm
This vintage Fukuro obi combines several traditional Japanese motifs in a bold, geometric composition. Repeating seigaiha (overlapping waves) and kikkō (tortoiseshell) patterns form the background, while clouds, floral details and other small auspicious motifs appear throughout.
But what makes the design particularly interesting to me are the folded fans scattered diagonally across the obi. The fans are represented folded, which is quite unusual, and each fan is decorated differently, with rich red, deep blue, gold and silver details.
The textured gold shapes behind each fan seem to echo its outline, almost like a golden shadow.
The fans are decorated with what looks like gold leaf or gold flakes, similar to the richly decorated fans seen in traditional Japanese arts and dance.
To me, they look like dancing fans, caught at different angles as they move across the composition. I love how this creates a sense of movement within and somehow look like they actually are dancing.
The square gold flakes visible on the purple fan in the motif and on the real object for reference.
