This motif is a free interpretation of Ogata Korin’s masterpiece Red and White Plum Blossoms, from the early 18th Century. This artwork, as well as this obi in a way, captures the essence of the distinctive aesthetics of the Rinpa school.
The Rinpa school is known for its bold, stylized compositions, often featuring natural motifs like flowers, waves, and birds rendered in a highly decorative manner. Artists used asymmetry, simplified forms, and striking contrasts, often with gold or silver backgrounds to create a sense of elegance and drama. Ogata Kōrin’s plum blossoms are a perfect example: his flowing lines and minimal yet expressive details capture both the essence and beauty of nature in a refined, almost abstract way.
The flowers are matte, made of silk, and the background contains golden lamé which makes it highly reflecting the light.

This bag was handcrafted in my studio in Kyoto, using vintage Japanese obi silk.
Features
Roomy yet lightweight, this clutch adds the same sophistication and sparkle as a piece of jewellery.
To help the silk last longer and resist wear and friction, it has been treated with a protective coating. The base is rigid and sturdy for added durability.
The chain is removable, allowing you to style it as a clutch or shoulder bag.
