Golden Cranes

Motif

This vintage silk obi features an elegant composition of cranes set against a richly textured background of warm gold and soft vermilion tones. One crane is depicted in flight with wings fully extended, while another stands gracefully below, creating a contrast between movement and stillness.

The background is composed of cloud-like forms in shimmering gold, interwoven with delicate, radiating pine tree patterns. These almost resemble small bursts of light, like faraway fireworks, gently animating the background and drawing attention to the central scene: the quiet encounter of two cranes, evoking a sense of connection and harmony.

In Japanese culture, cranes (tsuru) are powerful symbols of longevity, good fortune, and harmony. Often associated with auspicious occasions, they represent peace and enduring relationships, making them a timeless motif in formal kimono and obi design.

Once worn with a formal kimono, this obi is waiting to be transformed into a brand new bag, allowing this unique fabric to be carried into everyday life.

Framing

When ordering a Phone bag or a Bumbag, it won’t be possible to have the full motif of the crane appearing but I will show you the different options once you sent your request. A bigger design like the Computer bag or the Weekender will allow the entire motif to show.

In-person workshop in Kyoto

If you are visiting Kyoto and would like to spend some time discovering these fabrics in person, you are welcome to visit my studio.

Together, we will design your bag from A to Z. You will choose your favourite obi and even cut the fabric yourself, selecting the exact part of the motif you love most.

I will then carefully sew and finish your bag and ship it to you once it is complete.
