A compilation of unique bags I created on request this winter.
Black Enkei backpack
The Enkei backpack is Mikan’s largest backpack. It’s designed with a laptop pouch, as well as another for specifics like a yoga mat, tripod…
It's not on display anywhere else on the website. Due to the high manufacturing cost, I only showcase this design during events in Japan, where customers can try it on and ask for modifications.
This one was ordered last year by a movie maker in search of a versatile backpack to carry his creative essentials.
It's not often that I have the chance to work with black obi but I am always so amazed by their timeless modernity and beautiful textures!
Enkei & Kurume kasuri
If you followed my latest Artist in residency project in November, you might recognize this textile…I had the chance to stay in the Chikugo region, famous for its traditional indigo-dyed ikat called Kurume kasuri. Among different projects which emerged from this adventure, I presented a series of designs created from the local textile. During a public presentation at the end of the residency, some locals were seduced by the new interpretation I proposed and I had the honor to receive this beautiful order, which I loved making!
Historical piece
Sometimes I get asked if I can create a bag using a fabric provided by the customer. The answer is yes! I am always glad to turn unwanted kimono or obi into new designs! Such was the case for this bag, which was created from someone’s obi.
And what an obi! It was the first time I encountered a replica of an historical painting on a vintage obi. The scene represented is the arrival of the Portuguese in Japan in the 16th century. Take a look at the original painting on the Instagram post.
Tying the knot
It was not the only backpack I was requested to create from this fabric, a beautiful bridal obi, but, it was the first time I was asked to add a knot feature on it, and I loved the idea! I wanted to use Japanese obijime on my designs for such a long time!
Thanks to my amazing customers who give me the chance to create what I like!
